Video Interaction Guidance is a therapeutic intervention to help bring about positive change in relationships by promoting attuned interactions. Training to become a VIG guider consists of a two-day Initial Training Course (ITC) followed by supervised practice; these are accredited and certificated by the Association of Video Interaction Guidance UK (AVIGuk) www.videointeractionguidance.net

Two-day Initial Training Course in Video Interaction Guidance

Course aims and outline
The Initial Training Course introduces Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) UK and its theoretical origins.  It introduces the framework for micro-analysis of attuned and non-attuned interactions based on the work of developmental psychologist Colwyn Trevarthen. It also uses examples of video clips used by VIG guiders with clients and of trainee guiders themselves.

The ratio of trainers to participants is about 1:4, to allow close support in the small group skills-based practice sessions that participants engage in on both days. Participants also practise recording and downloading video using the most suitable up-to-date equipment.  Some advice is given about client consent and project planning.

At the end of the two days, participants will understand how and why VIG works. They will be able to describe the principles of attuned interactions and take this new awareness into their professional observations of parent-child, teacher-pupil or manager-supervisee communication. Having seen themselves on video and experienced supportive feedback about their interaction style from peers, participants will be able to describe their own strengths and identify for themselves a working point or goal for change in communication.

Who this course is for
This introductory training is particularly suitable for professionals working with parents/carers who are experiencing difficulties in communication with their children or teenagers and who wish to develop better relationships.  Trainees in VIG come from a wide variety of roles in care, education, health and the voluntary sector.  It is also relevant for staff in these areas who do not have a direct client role but support others who do so through teaching, management or supervision.

Arranging supervision
This training course is the starting point for VIG trainee guiders, followed by supervised practice and accreditation against AVIGuk criteria. Details may be found at www.videointeractionguidance.net.  Participants will need to arrange their own monthly supervision and accreditation sessions with an AVIGuk registered supervisor.  The minimum number of hours normally needed to reach the criteria is 15.  SeeChange supervisors can offer this service (see below) and can also provide impartial advice to prospective trainees to find the best solution for their circumstances.  Please contact us for an informal discussion about the possibilities.
